Description
The European bison (Bison bonasus), or 'wisent', is similar in appearance and social system to its North American relative.By 1927, the species had been lost from the wild entirely and only 54 individuals survived in zoos. There have been re-introductions to forests in Belarus, Poland, Russia, Lithuania, the Ukraine and Slovakia. This beautiful old male has been photographed in the Bialowieza Forest in Poland, very near to the border with Belarus.
