Description
The Sassi are disctricts of the city of Matera in Basilicata (Italy). In this picture, Sasso Caveoso is shown. The Sassi are characteristic of Basilicata and Apulia. They are made of houses dug into the calcarenitic rock itself (locally called "tufo"). In many cases, dwellings are similar to little caverns and the streets often run on top of other houses. In the past Matera was a source of shame for Italy, for the conditions of extreme poverty of people. Since 1993 it has awarded the status of World Heritage Site by UNESCO and has been declared Italian host of European Capital of Culture for 2019.
